Gas Is So Scarce in Europe That Coal Is Making a Comeback
      https://finance.yahoo.com/news/gas-scarce-europe-coal-making…
      ...

Europe is so short of natural gas that the continent -- usually seen as the poster child for the global fight against emissions -- is turning to coal to meet electricity demand that is now back to pre-pandemic levels.

Coal usage in the continent jumped 10% to 15% this year after a colder- and longer-than-usual winter left gas storage sites depleted, said Andy Sommer, team leader of fundamental analysis and modeling at Swiss trader Axpo Solutions AG. As economies reopen and people go back to the office, countries like Germany, the Netherlands and Poland turned to coal to keep the lights on.

Europe has long been at the forefront of the battle to reduce global warming. The continent has the world’s largest carbon market, charging the likes of utilities, steel producers and cement makers for polluting the environment. But even with record carbon prices this year, low gas reserves mean burning coal -- the dirties of fossil fuels -- has become more widespread again.

“Energy demand has been pretty strong in Europe and we have seen a recovery from the pandemic,” Sommer said in an interview. “Gas storage is so low now that Europe cannot afford to run extra power generation with the fuel.”

allzu oft lagen bzw liegen diese Leute richtig; man sollte das also nicht einfach abtun, siehe auch den letzten von dir zitierten Absatz

Aber es geht ja hier um Whitehaven; insofern muß man das nicht überstrapazieren

“Our financial model attributes zero value to Thungela,” Boatman said in the report on its website Sunday. “By seemingly underreporting its environmental liabilities, could Anglo and Thungela have misled investors over the true value of these assets?”

Anglo said in a statement in response to the Boatman report that the provision on Thungela’s balance sheet is “over and above the regulatory guidance applicable to miners in South Africa.”

“The basis for provisioning under the draft NEMA regulations simply does not accurately reflect the actual or likely sums needed to discharge such liabilities,” Anglo said. “It is precisely because the amount required to be provisioned under the draft NEMA regulations is considered to be artificial, and arbitrarily inflated, that the draft has remained under review since 2015.”

Boatman, which provides research for short-sellers, made its name three years ago when it published a list of highly critical claims against Babcock International Plc. Babcock’s previous management consistently rejected the claims, but the defense company has lost million of pounds in value and earlier this year took a 1.7 billion pound ($2.4 billion) writedown as part of a sweeping overhaul by its new management.

It’s Not Over for Coal Yet as Global Prices Surge on Hot Demand
      https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-06-03/it-s-not-…
      ...

Even with China’s import ban, Australian coal futures are surging thanks to buying from Japan, South Korea and Taiwan. Spot prices for high-quality thermal coal in the port of Newcastle rose to the highest level since 2011 on Monday.

The spike is rippling out of Asia and across the globe. Northwest European coal jumped more than 6% last month and reached a two-year high on Tuesday. Spot coal in Pennsylvania is up 22% this year.

The question now is, how long it will last? Goldman Sachs Group Inc. raised its 2021 and 2022 forecasts for Newcastle coal this week on the demand strength and the difficulty of permitting and building new mines in Australia. Morgan Stanley, on the other hand, expects a correction in the northern hemisphere fall as it sees the market in surplus when supply begins to pick up.

Even with rising Chinese demand, IHS sees global consumption of seaborne thermal coal at least 55 million tons lower this year than in 2019 as major users like India battle the virus. While the market will be tight in the near term, there’s still ample capacity for later in 2021, Stevenson said. “This is a bad spike to invest into. Mid-term fundamentals are still bearish.”
