L’Occitane adds some gloss to sales

But Macau and Hong Kong turnover of cosmetics retailer shows slower growth in nine months to end-December
French cosmetics retailer L'Occitane SA posted a slight rise of 0.3 percent in net sales in the nine months ended December 31, the company said in a filing to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange this week.
L’Occitane, which last year opened its third shop here, said net sales increased to 803.9 million euros (8.78 billion patacas) in the April-December period.
But the contribution of Macau and Hong Kong for overall growth dropped to 10.2 percent in the nine months to December, from 10.3 percent in the year-ago period.
Net sales in Macau and Hong Kong totalled 82.3 million euros, the company said in the filing.
The cosmetics retailer had three L’Occitane shops in Macau as of December 31, it added in the statement.
The company plans to open two more shops here, in 2014 and 2015, in new shopping centres, L'Occitane’s president in the Asia-Pacific region, André Hoffmann, said last month.
Mr Hoffmann told Business Daily in an interview that one shop would be in the second phase of the Galaxy Macau casino-resort and the other would be in another Cotai resort.
He predicted that Macau would account for more than 10 percent of the sales made by L’Occitane’s Hong Kong operation, which its Macau outlets are a part of.
He also said L'Occitane intended to introduce its smaller brands in Macau, starting with its Melvita organic skincare products. “This would the next brand we would like to launch in Macau. We are already looking for an appropriate retail location,” he said last month.
Winning big
Cosmetic retailers here are reaping greater returns on the back of mainland Chinese’ higher purchasing power.
Sa Sa International Holdings Ltd announced earlier this month that its fourth quarter same-store sales in Macau and Hong Kong were 15.8 percent higher than a year earlier. Sa Sa’s fourth-quarter turnover in all its shops in Macau and Hong Kong grew by 17.4 percent to HK$2.08 billion (US$267.9 million), it said in a filing.
When it comes to buying cosmetics, middle-class mainlanders prefer Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan, a survey by consulting firm KPMG showed last year.
A majority of survey respondents said they purchase luxury items during overseas trips, with cosmetics, watches and bags winning the top spot. Among cosmetic buyers, a majority (60 percent) said they had bought cosmetics in Macau, Hong Kong and Taiwan over the previous 12 months, last year’s survey showed.
“I absolutely believe there is potential for us to open more stores,” L’Occitane’s Mr Hoffmann said in the interview. “In Macau we can easily have five or six stores.”
Last month, the company also opened its L’Occitane café on the upper floor of L’Occitane’s shop in Senado Square.
Mr Hoffmann said that the Senado Square helped the company increase its sales in Macau by 124 percent as of last month.
