Geo 3rd-quarter earnings rise on increase in number of prison beds under operation
BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) -- Prison construction and management company Geo Group said Monday third-quarter earnings rose as it brought more prison beds under its operation.
Net income rose 25 percent to $15.9 million, or 31 cents a share, from $12.7 million, or 25 cents a year earlier.
Adjusted to exclude items, profit rose 34 cents per share. Analysts, who typically forecast adjusted earnings, expected profit of 31 cents per share, according to Thomson Reuters.
A drop in revenue from its Geo Care business caused total revenue to slip to $265.4 million from $266.1 million last year. Corrections revenue in the U.S. rose to $189 million from $169.4 million.
The company said it has projects under development scheduled to open in the next 20 months that will increase the number of beds under its operation by 14 percent.
The company had 53,144 beds under its management during the quarter, up from 49,900 a year earlier.
Geo shares added 33 cents, or 1.9 percent, to $17.99 in early afternoon trading. In the past year, the stock has ranged from $12.65 to $31.98.

The Geo Group has announced the execution of an intergovernmental agreement between Montgomery County, Texas, and the U.S. Marshals Service to house up to 1,100 detainees at the new county-owned Joe Corley Detention Facility.
The Boca Raton-based operator of correctional, detention, mental health and residential treatment facilities (NYSE: GEO) said it will manage the facility under a two-year agreement with the county. The agreement is subject to continuing two-year extensions. Geo expects to begin the intake of detainees in the third quarter of 2008 and the facility to generate about $14 million in annual operating revenues at full occupancy.

Avondale Partners analyst Kevin Campbell said the Boca Raton, Fla., company has several opportunities to surpass his expectations this year.
The broader markets climbed Monday, with the Dow Jones industrial average rising more than 200 points.
Banc of America analyst T.C. Robillard said Geo Group Inc. expects to win contracts for more than 10,000 new beds in 2008, and said that tighter state budgets won't hurt prison operators. He wrote that the company is benefiting from strong demand and he believes it will reach his profit forecasts.

Na ja mit besserer Ausbildung etc. kann man schon einige davon abhalten, aber ALLE (so wie hierzulande die Politiker immer gerne
behaupten) kann man weder davon abhalten kriminell zu werden, bzw.
man kann der Grossteil nicht resolizalisieren (die Resozialisierung
aller Krimilnellen ist eine Lebenslüge und Märchen bzw. Wuschdenken unserer weltfremden Gutmenschenpolitiker), denn viele Kriminelle müssten erst einmal sozialisiert werden.
Genauso wie die Lebenslüge der Amis, dass Drill und Militär aus einem schlechten Menschen einen guten machen würde.
Die USA mit ihrem knallharten Kapitalismus und ihrer Gewaltverherrlichung in TV und Kino (wobei aber bei den prüden Amis
andere Dinge im TV tabu sind, welch Witz) und ihrer mangelhaften Schulausbildung brauchen sich über den ständigen Anstieg von Kriminalität nicht wirklich wundern.

Eine wirklich bemerkenswerte Meldung die ich Euch nicht vorentahlten möchte, da ich diese Zahl zumindest äusserst bemerkenswert finde:
Erstmals in der Geschichte der USA befindet sich ein Prozent der erwachsenen Bevölkerung im Gefängnis, darunter vor allem schwarze Amerikaner und Männer. Die hohen Unterbringungskosten machen den US-Bundesstaaten zu schaffen.
Zu Beginn des Jahres saßen rund 2,3 Millionen Menschen in den USA in Haft, berichtete das unabhängige Wissenschaftsinstitut PEW in Washington. Im vergangenen Jahr stieg demnach die Gesamtzahl aller US-Gefangenen um rund 25.000. Dem Bericht zufolge haben die USA weltweit den höchsten Anteil von Gefangenen an der Gesamtbevölkerung.
Jeder neunte schwarze Amerikaner im Alter zwischen 20 und 34 Jahren sitze inzwischen ein. Bei weißen US-Bürgern dieser Altersgruppe befinde sich nur einer von 30 in Haft. Derzeit seien 13 mal so viele Männer im Gefängnis wie Frauen. Deren Zahl steige aber stetig.
Die Kosten für die 50 US-Bundesstaaten zum Unterhalt der Haft- und Justizvollzugsanstalten belaufen sich auf 49 Mrd. $ jährlich, heißt es in der Studie. Vor 20 Jahren hätten die Kosten 11 Mrd. $ betragen. Damit seien die Haftkosten sechsmal so stark gestiegen wie die Ausgaben für Bildung. (FTD)
Diese jährliche Belastung des Staatshaushaltes ist nicht von schlechten Eltern. Eventuell wäre ein Umdenken und entsprechende Förderung der Bildung, um den Menschen eine bessere Perspektive zu bieten, auch hier der bessere Weg auf Dauer…

Prison operator GEO Group Inc (GEO.N: Quote, Profile, Research) posted a higher quarterly profit and forecast a strong project pipeline for 2008, sending the shares up as much as 12 percent.
GEO said it expects to begin operations at seven new projects representing about 5,900 beds in 2008, and is currently competing for more than 20,000 beds in the United States and overseas.
Jesup & Lamont analyst Robert Wasserman said the stock was up on a promising 2008 outlook. "They (GEO) see cell growth in 2008... They got a pretty good rate increase over 2007 on their existing contracts," he said by phone.
GEO, which has operations in Australia, South Africa and the UK, said it was maintaining its financial outlook for 2008, despite a weather-related construction delay at its LaSalle Detention Facility.
For fiscal 2008, the company reiterated its pro forma earnings forecast of $1.27 to $1.35 a share, before items, on operating revenue of $1.01 billion to $1.03 billion.
Analysts were expecting earnings of $1.30 a share, excluding special items, on revenue of $1.10 billion.
Boca Raton, Florida-based GEO said its outlook does not include the possible reactivation of its facilities in Baldwin, Michigan, and Coke County, Texas.
The company said it still expects first-quarter pro forma earnings of 25 cents to 27 cents a share, excluding items, on operating revenue of $240 million to $245 million.
Analysts on average expect earnings of 27 cents a share, before special items, for the first quarter on revenue of $259.8 million, according to Reuters Estimates.
GEO, the second largest provider of correctional services to the U.S. government, currently has operations in 18 states of the country with more than 50,000 beds.
The company reported fourth-quarter income from continuing operations of $11.5 million on revenue of $262.6 million.
The pro forma income from continuing operations rose 32 percent to $14.1 million, or 27 cents a share, and was in line with the analysts' estimate.
Shares of the company pared earlier gains to close up $1.57 at $25.57 Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange

Börse ist nun mal nichts für Traumtänzer. Man muss hier nicht investiert sein aber zu verurteilen gibts schon mal gar nichts. Wenn mans verurteilen möchte, dann aber bitteschön die komplette Wirtschaftspolitik auf dem Planeten Erde in den "entwickelten Ländern". Angriffspunkte gibts da überall, wenn man die moralischen Wertvorstellungen so hoch ansetzt wie es von dir gemacht wird.
