Under the terms of the combination, which is recommend by both boards and also has the support of Steve Morgan who has a stake in Redrow which he founded, each Redrow shareholder will get 1.44 new Barratt shares.
Matthew Pratt, who leads Redrow, said: "Together, we'll be in a much better position to offer a broader range of high-quality and energy efficient homes to customers. Both businesses are a great fit and there are many exciting opportunities to innovate and share knowledge across a range of different areas."
The merger brings together a total land pipeline of 92,345 plots, and the capacity to build in excess of 22,000 homes per year in the medium term.
Following completion of a deal Redrow shareholders will hold approximately 32.8% of the combined group and Barratt Shareholders will have around 67.2%.

McCarthy said the firm has $40bn of “dry powder” — funds raised but not yet invested — and is targeting its investment in parts of the real estate market with “the strongest cash flow growth and favourable supply demand fundamentals”, including logistics warehouses, data centres, and the “living” sector that includes apartments and student accommodation.
