Some analysts, including at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and Morgan Stanley, expect the central bank to turn more hawkish.

“Near-term, this is very positive and opens the door for a normalization” of EU relations and makes the release of funds “likely,” said Henrik Gullberg, a macro strategist at Coex Partners Ltd. “Further good news for the zloty would be if the central bank became more orthodox.”

Goldman economist Kevin Daly said he expected that to happen.

“We expect the central bank reaction function to now turn more hawkish as Governor Adam Glapinski’s voting record has previously been more hawkish under a Civic Platform-led government,” Daly wrote in a note.

Meanwhile, analysts from Erste Group Bank AG saw the strengthening of the zloty and chances of a more favorable policy toward the banking sector as opportunities, especially for state-controlled lenders. That drove stocks higher as it boosted optimism for lower inflation and a possible rejig of policymakers.

Millionen von Polen haben am Sonntag ein neues Parlament gewählt. Seit 21 Uhr sind die Wahlokale geschlossen. Nach ersten Wahlprognosen hat zwar die national-konservative Regierungspartei Recht und Gerechtigkeit (PiS) mit 36,8 Prozent die meisten Stimmen. Doch die Opposition um die Bürgerkoalition von Ex-Regierungschef Donald Tusk sicherte sich demnach aber die Mehrheit im Parlament.

Bei der Parlamentswahl in Polen zeichnet sich laut ersten Prognosen eine Mehrheit für die Opposition ab. Die Notenbank hatte zuletzt im September 2022 den Leitzins im Kampf gegen die hohe Inflation angehoben und ihn seitdem nicht angetastet. Zuvor hatte die Notenbank ihren Leitzins elfmal in Folge angehoben, um die hohe Inflation zu bekämpfen.

Offenbar ist die schwächelnde Wirtschaft stärker in den Fokus gerückt. So ist die polnische Wirtschaft im zweiten Quartal geschrumpft. Die Inflation lag im August allerdings immer noch bei 10,1 Prozent. Die Inflationsrisiken sind laut Ökonomen weiter groß. Schließlich haben vor den anstehenden Parlamentswahlen die Regierung und die Opposition große Sozialprogramme in Aussicht gestellt.

British financier Guy Hands has claimed that Poland will soon outstrip Britain in terms of wealth, the Bloomberg news agency has reported.

According to a report earlier this month by Britain's The Telegraph newspaper, Poland is on track to become wealthier than Britain by 2030 in terms of GDP per capita at purchasing power parity.

In an extensive feature in the Sunday Telegraph, David Johnson highlighted Poland's remarkable transition over the last 30-plus years, saying that the country "has become a hotbed for future-facing industries such as battery manufacturing and tech."

Double-digit inflation in Poland leaves no room for loosening monetary policy this year but interest rates will not rise further, central banker Ludwik Kotecki told Reuters.

With the main interest rate staying at 6.75% for a fourth month in a row in January and inflation for December coming in lower than expected, markets' focus has turned to when the National Bank of Poland (NBP) could start loosening policy.

"I believe that the Monetary Policy Council will not raise interest rates this year, but at the same time I do not see room to lower them in 2023," said Kotecki, who is a member of the central bank's rate-setting monetary policy council.

Kotecki said even talking about lower rates at the moment risked weakening the impact of monetary policy.
