Fortescue starts work on $550M Arizona renewable liquid hydrogen project

Australia's Fortescue Metals (OTCQX:FSUMF) said it broke ground Friday at its $550M green hydrogen project in Arizona, which it expects will produce as much as 11K metric tons/year of liquid renewable hydrogen to help decarbonize heavy-duty transport in the southwest U.S.

The Arizona Hydrogen project is the first of Fortescue's (OTCQX:FSUMF) planned green energy investments in North America; the company is working on other U.S. projects, including a manufacturing plant in Michigan for electrolyzers, batteries and electric vehicle chargers, and with the U.S. Department of Energy to build a Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub that would include a green hydrogen production plant in Washington state.

Fortescue (OTCQX:FSUMF) Executive Chair Andrew Forrest, speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, praised the U.S. for supporting decarbonization projects but also noted some proposed policies that he said could stall investment.

"Fortescue is unashamedly a first-mover in this space, [but] we need to be encouraged to that, not punished," Forrest said. "There are rules right now under consideration with the Biden Administration that would make already announced projects like this one dramatically more expensive and smaller."

Forrest was referring to the proposed Clean Hydrogen Production Tax Credit, or section 45V of the Inflation Reduction Act, which outlines how hydrogen producers qualify for the credit; draft rules propose to limit hydrogen producers' ability to provide project-spec

Fortescue eyes developing its copper assets, not looking at Cobre Panama

Australia’s Fortescue, the world’s fourth-largest iron ore miner, is looking at developing its copper resources but has not made a decision yet, its founder and executive chairman told Reuters on Saturday.

“The company has choices in front of it … we have a lot of copper options on the table. And when we feel the time is right, we’ll pull the trigger,” Andrew Forrest said during a visit to Beijing.

However, he said the company was not looking at First Quantum’s idled Cobre Panama copper mine. Cobre Panama, one of the world’s largest open-pit copper mines, was forced to shut in December after Panama’s top court ruled its contract was unconstitutional.

In February 2023, Fortescue said it would focus on copper, rare earths and lithium while ramping up exploration activities for critical minerals portfol

      US-Zoll auf chin. Stahl

      to expectations

Iron ore prices have been trading between US$120 to US$140 a tonne for most of this year on hopes Chinese stimulus measures would revive economic activity and its beleaguered real estate sector. But local governments have so far been reluctant to release the flood gates.
The data from Mysteel points to a rather bearish outlook for the steel making ingredient. Here are some of the key takeaways from its report dated February 26.
Iron ore demand among most Chinese steelmakers after the Lunar New Year as weakness in imported iron ore prices made mills opt to monitor prices first instead of restocking immediately
Steel mills are facing poor margins or even losses, many steelmakers postponed plans to resume production and others started idling their blast furnaces
Hot metal production among 247 Chinese steelmakers ended six successive weeks of gains over February 16-22, down 0.5% week-on-week. Industry sources expect the fall in output to continue this week
Iron ore port stocks have accumulated to an 11-month high
Fortescue shares are down around 10% since late January (the stock also traded ex-dividend on 28 February).

Bis zum bis 05.08.2003 hatte sie den Namen "Allied Mining and Processing Limited".
