PepsiCo Sees Earns Up 15 Percent or More

PURCHASE, N.Y. (Reuters) - PepsiCo Inc. (NYSE:PEP - news), the second-largest U.S. soft drink maker, said on Monday it expects to post earnings growth of 15 percent or more for the first quarter, based on healthy volume and revenue trends across all of its divisions.

PepsiCo said it expects soft drink unit Pepsi-Cola North America to report strong bottler case sales growth of over 4 percent, based on strength across the bottling system and the addition of SoBe, the company said. PepsiCo bought a 90 percent stake in South Beach Beverage Co., known for its SoBe herb-enhanced teas, energy and fruit drinks, in early January.

The company did not provide a detailed outlook for its Frito-Lay snack unit or its Tropicana Products juice unit.

Analysts forecast earnings in a range of 31 to 34 cents a share for the quarter, with a consensus of 33 cents, according to research firm Thomson Financial/First Call. Purchase, N.Y.-based PepsiCo earned 29 cents per share in the first quarter of 2000.

``We are confident we will deliver a solid, high-quality first quarter, consistent with the consensus estimate, and we believe we will achieve strong results for the year in line with our goals,`` Roger Enrico, chairman and chief executive, said in a news release.

Last week, Pepsi Bottling Group Inc. (NYSE:PBG - news), the largest distributor of Pepsi drinks, posted a 53 percent rise in profits, due in part to new products. Those results came soon after Coca-Cola Enterprises Inc. (NYSE:CCE - news), the largest bottler of drinks for archrival Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE:KO - news), said it will miss financial forecasts due to soft North American volume and price competition.

Shares of PepsiCo climbed 8 cents to $41.99 in Monday afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites), while Coca-Cola shares slipped 3 cents to $44.54. PepsiCo shares have outperformed those of Coca-Cola by more than 15 percent over the last 52 weeks.

PepsiCo plans to report its quarterly results on April 23. Coca-Cola is set to report its first-quarter results later this week.
