Hallo zusammen,

Pac Cent Cyber says raises HK$4 bln in
HONG KONG, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Pacific Century CyberWorks Ltd said on Wednesday it had raised nearly HK$4 billion in a placement of 635 million existing and new shares at HK$6.10 each on Tuesday.
``We raised HK$4 billion in 35 minutes. The placement was done through BNP Prime Peregrine and the investors were all institutional investors,`` said a spokeswoman for Pacific Century CyberWorks.
She said part of the proceeds from the placement would be used to fund a US$129 million investment for five million shares in U.S.-based Internet firm SoftNet Systems Inc (NasdaqNM:SOFN - news).
SoftNet said in a statement the two companies had agreed to form a joint venture called Pacific Century SoftNet that would market products and services to cable operators in 63 countries.
The remainder of the proceeds would be used for other acquisitions, the spokeswoman said.
Richard Li, chairman of Pacific Century CyberWorks, told reporters late on Tuesday: ``Our existing purchases (targets) are what can strengthen PCC, which could strategically enhance our broadband (network), a very ambitious project. We are currently looking at this area.``
The spokeswoman said trading in Pacific Century CyberWorks shares would be suspended on Wednesday pending approval from the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong for listing of the placement shares.
The shares ended on Tuesday at HK$6.65, down HK$0.15 or 2.21
percent.

Hmm,

From bricks and mortar to bits and bytes... A Hong Kong-listed flagship for Pacific Century Group.
Pacific Century CyberWorks Limited [Reuters: 1186.HK ; Bloomberg: 1186], is the Group`s Hong Kong-listed flagship company for its technology businesses. The new company was formed through the acquisition of Hong Kong-listed Tricom Holdings Limited (Tricom) a telecommunications service provider.
On August 1, 1999, Pacific Century CyberWorks announced it is acquiring Pacific Convergence Corporation (PCC), a joint venture formed in February 1998 by Pacific Century Group (60%) with Intel Corporation (40%), the world`s leading maker of microprocessors. Intel`s investment of US$50 million in Pacific Century CyberWorks, combined with its initial 40% stake in PCC, gives Intel a 13% stake in Pacific Century CyberWorks. PCC is expected to become the preeminent Internet service, content and eCommerce provider in Asia. The PCC pan-Asian service, by creating a broadband ISP platform, providing integrated on-line content and enabling and operating the development of a regional eCommerce network, will comprise the largest Internet distribution system in the world, with a reach of 110 million households.
Pacific Century CyberWorks will enter into and invest in local and international information technology and Internet businesses and, subject to agreement by the Government of Hong Kong, will be the sole vehicle to sign all agreements with the Government of Hong Kong in connection with the Cyber-Port project.
Richard Li, Chairman and Chief Executive of Pacific Century Group, is Chairman of the new company. Other senior PCG executives have also taken up posts in the new company: Francis Yuen and Peter To are joint Deputy Chairmen, and Alex Arena is Group Managing Director.
Our aim is to build on our expertise and knowledge of digital technology and new media to become a preeminent leader in Internet content and services such as eCommerce. We believe there are tremendous synergies between our existing activities in this field and future business opportunities.
The new company`s parallel involvements in the Cyber-Port and the fast-growing information technology and Internet sectors, and its acquisition of Pacific Convergence Corporation, will help secure Hong Kong`s position as a hub of Asia-focused eCommerce and Internet content development. We intend to create new opportunities for the best talent in the region and stimulate the industry.

Intel teams with Nokia on Linux set-top
By Robert Lemos ZDNet News (12.10.99)
Chip giant Intel Corp. announced on Tuesday that it would team with European phone maker Nokia to deliver an enhanced-TV-capable set-top box using the Linux operating system.
"We still recognize the PC as the No. 1 home device," said Marta Hasler, director of marketing for Intel`s home products group, "but we see the capability to bring the Internet to other parts of the home."
The Nokia alliance is the third set-top deal that Intel has signed in as many months.
In early August, the chip maker announced a deal with Hughes Network Systems for an interactive TV set-top device -- the first of which will be America Online`s AOL TV box -- that will integrate Internet content and DirecTV programming for U.S. audiences.
In early September, Intel (Nasdaq:INTC) announced a similar broadband deal with Pacific Century Group for the Asia-Pacific region.
Going global
"With the addition of Nokia, we are showing that our product is a worldwide offering," said Hasler, who added that the deals are nonexclusive.
The Nokia (NYSE:NOK) set-top will be based on Intel`s PC architecture and will use an x86-based processor, the Linux operating system, and AOL`s (NYSE:AOL) open-source Mozilla browser.
Nokia requested Linux to be the main operating system, said Hasler.
"At a very high level, Linux allows them more flexibility and faster innovation because they can control the product," she said. The Pacific Century Group will also use Linux as part of its broadband platform as well.
Intel and Nokia plan to use other open standards, such as Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) and the Advanced Television Enhancement Forum (ATVEF) specification to deliver Internet content and enhance TV programming. The Forum already has 80 industry members.
Nokia expects the first product to be introduced in the second half of 2000.

The Pacific Century Group (http://www.pcg-group.com) was established in October 1993 with proceeds from the sale of STAR TV, the first pan-Asian satellite television network, operating in more than 50 countries, to News Corp. At the sale, which was completed in 1995, the valuation of the enterprise was US$950.5 million. The total original investment in STAR TV, which Mr. Richard Li founded in 1990, was US$125 million.
Pacific Century CyberWorks, the Group`s technology flagship has Intel (12%) and CMGI (4.9%) as its strategic investors. One of its subsidiaries, Pacific Convergence Corporation`s objective is to be the preeminent provider of broadband Internet services in Asia via its satellite network serving 110 million connected cable households.
The Pacific Century Group is the sole partner with the Government of Hong Kong in the approximately US$1.6 billion Cyber-Port project (http://www.cyber-port.com) announced by the Financial Secretary Donald Tsang in his 1999 Budget. The Cyber-Port is a comprehensive facility designed to foster the development of Hong Kong`s information services sector through the formation of a strategic cluster of both information technology and services companies at the one location.
The Group`s aim is to build on its expertise and knowledge of digital technology and new media to become a preeminent leader in Internet content and services such as eCommerce. The Group believes there are tremendous synergies between its existing activities in this field and future business opportunities. The Group`s parallel involvements in the Cyber-Port and PCCW`s fast-growing information technology and Internet sectors, and its acquisition of Pacific Convergence Corporation, will help secure Hong Kong`s position as a hub of Asia-focused eCommerce and Internet content development, and create new opportunities for the best talent in the region.
