Walden is also bullish about Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (FCX) , the U.S.-based mining giant that completed its acquisition of rival Phelps Dodge Corp. in March.

"It's one of the cheapest companies in North America," Walden said of the combined business, which is the world's second-largest copper producer and has global interests in gold and other metals and minerals.

The company's shares are priced inexpensively due to investors' concern about commodity pricing and demand, but such pessimism is short-sighted, Walden says.

"If you held commodity prices about where they are, the company would generate over $16 a share of earnings; at $16 a share, that's a P/E of 4.5," Walden said. "That reflects a lot of skepticism about the price of copper and gold."

Demand for copper should remain healthy, he adds. As an example, he points to electrical usage in Asia that is soaring and notes that those networks require copper wire.

"Freport has the luxury of a very good growth profile," Walden said. "The price is remarkable. That's why it's a significant holding."

In New York trading Friday, shares of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold closed up 21 cents at $71.15.
